FolkStone was developed by PLEA Community Services Society of BC. PLEA is an accredited, community-based organization with a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality, creative services. We care deeply about those who face real challenges in their lives and are passionately committed to our one-to-one style of working with people that is personal, effective and respectful. We support one another to provide challenging services to consistently high standards. We enjoy the innovative process of building new services and finding new ways to more effectively meet client and community needs.
FolkStone began as an idea. Stewart Smith, Residential Program Director for PLEA, observed that most seniors did not look forward to the thought of an institutionalized setting when living alone was no longer an option. They preferred the concept of a care home environment where they could experience the activities of a neighborhood and community while also receiving individualized care and attention.
In 2000, the FolkStone Adult Family Care Home Model was conceived.
The FolkStone Home concept was developed as a social model to provide levels of service and care in a cost-effective manner as an alternative to the residential model. Since the beginning, the FolkStone program has evolved and now provides care to people (not just seniors) who are unable to live independently.
FolkStone is a non-profit program that offers people the opportunity to live with real families in familiar neighborhoods. Each FolkStone home is the home of a carefully screened and qualified caregiver. In addition to caregivers, FolkStone provides access to RN assessments, social workers, nutritionists and other health care professionals. Geriatric assessment referrals are made as needed.
FolkStone is a unique and progressive solution; an opportunity to live in a comfortable family setting, and receive the expert medical and nursing care provided. FolkStone residents maintain as much control over their life and environment as possible, and continue to enjoy the atmosphere and activities provided by the community in which they live. FolkStone is a warmer, gentler alternative to traditional institutional settings.
FolkStone homes are private residences that provide accommodation, meals, nursing care and personal services to people who are unable to live independently. FolkStone families are committed to devoting the time and energy necessary to provide the highest quality of personal care to the residents living in their home. It is particularly appropriate for those who want a non-institutional environment. We provide:
- Options for people wishing to remain in their home communities, including the ability to receive increasing levels of care in the same home.
- Residential care to persons with acquired brain injury, developmental disabilities and other significant health conditions.
- Appropriate and stimulating social and recreational activities and interaction with friends for emotional support.
FolkStone Family Care Homes are located throughout the BC Lower Mainland. Nursing and care assistant staff provide support and supervision, with 24 hour availability. Staff visit all clients for regularly scheduled visits, follow-up and caregiver consultation.
